Sometimes it’s a gemstone with a loose fitting; a super-cool piece of seashell; or the one remaining earring which will serve better now as a pendant, proudly displayed on a sturdy sterling silver chain.

Nothing sparkles like sterling silver. Except for gold, perhaps. Gold has a pretty amazing sparkle too. Anyway, we work exclusively in silver for the time being.

Here’s one example of a piece we crafted for Sherry in New Jersey. The emerald in this custom wire wrap was inherited from her mother, who picked it up while on her honeymoon in Brazil. Sadly, Sherry’s mother never did anything with it beyond leaving it to Sherry. Which is something. Obviously, without the increase in sentimental value caused by the very act of inheritance, we may never have had the opportunity to turn the emerald into the beautiful object of art that it is.

Here’s a second example of a custom wrap; and an unusual one at that. This is a plate shard found on the shores on Thailand by Michelle from Ohio, USA, shortly after the 2004 Tsunami. Our client suspects that the shard is from the Tsunami, but I personally think it looks older.

It was a really beautiful plate in its time. Was it made by the local indigenous peoples? Note the scalloped edges, especially visible in the “From this” photo above. We would love know the origins of this plate … wouldn’t it be funny if it came from China? Or perhaps not. We look forward to hearing your thoughts below!

With our background in ceramics here at Wire Wrap Jewelry Art, we appreciate the use of glazes combined with the unusual absence of glaze on the face of the plate, as well as the very pleasing cream color with blue accent. The overall design is quite lovely! Thank you Michelle for entrusting us with your lovely plate shard. It was our pleasure to wrap it for you.

There is a name for recycling broken tiles and shards of glass and reusing the shards to create a new object of art. The name is “pique-assiette”, which means “plate-stealer” in French and is pronounced PEEK ah-see-EHT. Pique-assiette grew out of the notion of not wasting anything. CLICK HERE FOR MORE.
